Tureen is thrilled to participate in the inaugural edition of Post-Fair. We will present a solo booth of paintings by Lula Broglio (b.1993). This will mark the U.S. debut of the artist’s work.

Broglio’s series of butterfly portraits hum with a distinct carnality at first inspection. These are not specimens but rather beings, vibrant apparitions with their own wry expressions and genitalia; they linger in a state of transition between human and insect form. The artist’s home is in the Alps but she grew up seaside, a life lived in her own topographical cocoon. She often describes her experience with painting as akin to that of being in nature and bearing witness to both a sonic and visual transformation, the evidence for which you see imbued in each work—a soft, sometimes fleshy distortion of the image builds in color and form, the sound of a growing flower.

Critical to this series is the legacy of both 15th-16th Century Italian devotional paintings of the Madonna and Childand 17th Century Flemish insect studies. For these artists, the precariousness of human life was at the fore and theirartistic communion with the butterfly made their symbolic hand even heavier. It is this maudlin tendency of whichBroglio plays up the irony in her depictions, no less serious in her dedication to the mystery of painting but embracingin equal measure life’s absurdity. Here she simultaneously upends and reifies the natural order of things.
